Roanoke Museums
Formally a vacant 1914 feed and seed warehouse, this five-story complex on the Farmers' Market is now the home of important cultural organizations. The Art Museum of Western Virginia, The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge, the History Museum & Historical Society of Western Virginia, Mill Mountain Theatre, and the Science Museum of Western Virginia. Opera Roanoke and Roanoke Ballet Theatre are all located a few blocks away.
The Science Museum of Western Virginia contains many hand-on exhibits aimed at teaching scientific concepts to its visitors. The museum features a series of changing exhibits as well as permanent ones. A museum shop is located inside the museum. Large groups are welcome by appointment and guides can be arranged.
The Virginia Museum of Transportation features a collection of vehicles, photos and other archival materials, that document the history of transportation. Included in the collection are rare railway and road vehicles. The museum also contains a library and archive center.
The History Museum and Historical Society of West Virginia is dedicated to preserving and collecting pieces of Roanoke and West Virginia's history. Exhibits consist of lectures, photos and historical objects that represent a theme in Virginia's past.
